I feel very badly for the family whose children can’t attend Frisco ISD with the rest of their neighbors. Shame on Lewisville ISD for not putting g children first! It’s only 4 homes! What is wrong with people? Do they just love the power? Seriously, those children should be enjoying their neighborhood friends in the Frisco school!

My exact thoughts, Donna. If it’s not power, it’s definitely the $34,633. At least it seems this family can afford to sell and get their kiddos reestablished into a new home and ISD while still young. It’s a wonderful thing that Coppell ISD allows open enrollment for all Coppellians.

I’m cool with Hedgehogs & American Kestrals,

After I published this edition, I was informed that Lewisville ISD trustees rejected a similar petition last year regarding 17 homes in Coppell’s Westhaven neighborhood. Those homeowners wanted to be annexed by Coppell ISD, which encompasses the other 200 or so properties in their subdivision. During that September 2022 hearing, a Lewisville ISD administrator said the tax impact of those 17 homes is $113,656. When making a motion to adopt a resolution disapproving the petition, Trustee Katherine Sells said the petitioners did not submit information needed to verify that their petition had been signed by a majority of the registered voters in the affected territory. She also said, “Any educational or social impact of the requested detachment and annexation would not be positive or negative to any significant degree and is not sufficient to outweigh the negative economic impact posed to LISD.”

Q1: Regarding Lewisville boundary case, can’t the couple do open enrollment for their daughters, if Lewisville permits open enrollment like CISD? Seems that should be allowed as courtesy by LISD since that house has elementary school an hour’s bus ride away. Seems I missed this part if it was mentioned in article or was missed in hearing too.

Q2: Kistrel as Coppell’s official bird!!?? Since when did Coppell City council start giving into high school student’s projects for college résumé’s? Why can’t UNT designate a city closer to UNT to setup more nests for Kistrels? Seems more logical than driving all the way to now much urbanized Coppell instead of still rural with much green cover around UNT compared to Coppell.

IMHO …

It appears that Frisco ISD does not offer open enrollment: https://www.friscoisd.org/about/enrollment/homework

"Since when did Coppell City council start giving into high school student’s projects for college résumé’s"

I think you spelled "proudly supporting a student's passion" wrong. I think this decision fits right in line with the Parks and Recreation Board's (this was not the City Council, BTW) roles of conserving, preserving, and enriching our limited open spaces while also supporting and engaging the community.

And UNT has "designated" anything, and they aren't driving anywhere. The article indicates that the Biodiversity Center staff has been in touch with researchers from the university to 1) learn how to better support the kestrel population, and 2) potentially aid the researchers in their work.

It sounds like everyone involved is very happy with all aspects of this young Coppell resident's avian advocacy. We should all be so lucky to find something in our lives we are this passionate about.
