Bond Projects on Hold Until Closure Decision • Districts Struggle to Fund Pay Raises • Nasty Storms Lead to Ugly Behavior • Path Cleared for 30 Homes on Valley Ranch Lot
After I published this edition, I was informed that the administration is not recommending these options; they were merely explaining their costs to the trustees: “That’s why the administration is also recommending increasing the district’s contribution to each employee’s health care from $350 per month to $400. Additionally, the administration is recommending a one-time payment of $650 to each employee to help offset the premium hike.”
It is very disheartening to me as a 44 year resident of Coppell to hear about the financial struggles of our school district. Our school boards and our superintendents over the years have always been good stewards of our tax dollars while making choices that benefit our students and teachers.
Because of their efforts, our students shine and earn many awards and go on to be successful adults! Former teachers and administrators have gone on to be leaders here and in other districts. For example, Tabitha Branum was a middle school teacher and administrator here and now is Superintendent of Richardson ISD. Our own Brad Hunt started here as a teacher. I’m very proud of Coppell ISD. I pray our leaders can make the correct and difficult decisions facing them. Gov. Abbott has not been a supporter of our public schools and now our students and teachers are feeling the pinch!
As a parent of two neurodiverse kids whose needs are not being met in CISD, I have done research on and like the idea of vouchers. For example Charter schools have far less funding than ISDs, but most pay their teachers just as well and produce better outcomes than ISDs. As in any large corporation, money is being wasted somewhere. Maybe this will make the ISDs look into cutting some of that waste.
There are a lot of redundant positions at the admin building. I worked for both a charter school district that has over 90 campuses state wide and an ISD that has less than 20 schools. You want to guess who had fewer admin employees? It wasn't the charter school district with 90 campuses.
I've never heard of custom, higher-end homes referred to as an eyesore! I literally laughed out loud.
Great job as always Dan! I really enjoy the Chronicle.

What do you suggest they cut? What waste?

Did you work in Coppell ISD?
I purposely didn't name the ISD for a reason.
